New in Mozart 7

Mozart 7 was released in April 2003.

It introduced the following new features.

Please note: the music images on this page were created with Mozart 7. The quality of engraving provided by the current version is much improved in many respects.

Guitar chord symbols

  • Explicit bass notes may now be included in chord names - eg G7/B or G7/A - and are respected on play-back.  The indicated bass note may be part of the chord or not.
  • C7Chord shape diagrams are now supported for guitar.
  • An extensive guitar chord shape dictionary is included.
  • Custom chord shapes, which are not in the main dictionary, may be defined and stored in an integrated custom dictionary.

Repeated accidentals

  • Accidentals are no longer compulsory on notes at a different octave from one which has appeared earlier in the bar, but courtesy accidentals are suggested in this case.

Key signatures and transposition

  • Key signature changes may now be optionally introduced (with a single command) without changing the pitch of existing music following the change.
  • This allows, for example, traditional french horn, and other modern, parts notated in C-major with accidentals in the music.
  • It also allows convenient post-processing of MIDI imports where the MIDI file has neglected to include key signature information.

Multiple bars rest

  • bars restThe length of multiple bars rest symbol is now much more flexible.   You can now get any number of bars rest on one line.
  • A multiple bars rest can now be added in pieces with more than one strand, as long as all parallel strands have rests.
  • There are no longer non-printing control items indicating the beginning and end of a multiple bars rest, making the screen view even more WYSIWYG.

NIFF import and scanning music

  • Import of NIFF files (Notation Interchange File Format) is now supported.  NIFF is a standard file type which (unlike MIDI) stores notation formatting information.
  • Import of scanned-in music is thus now possible from any third party music scanning software (such as the SharpEye scanner at http://www.visiv.co.uk  ) which can output in the standard NIFF format.  (Like MOZART, some scanning programs offer freely downloadable evaluation versions.)

Grand staff

  • The two 5-line staves which constitute a "grand staff" in (eg) piano parts are now much more tightly interconnected.
  • beaming illustrationQuavers (8th notes) and shorter may be beamed in runs from one stave to the other.
  • Note stems may join notes on the two staves.

clefsSymbols

  • Five more clefs, used in music up to the 18th century, are now available (making 9 in all plus octave variants).

  • Tremolo notation is now fully supported.                                  tremolo
  • Two bar repeat signs are now fully supported                        2-bars rest
  • Glissando markings are now supported.                                    glissando
  • The font used for rehearsal marks is now fully configurable.

miniOverview

  • A new "minimal" font size has been introduced as an option on the the screen allowing a better overview - for example during play-back.

Play-back

  • 8va and 8vb are now supported and respected on play-back.
  • The trill speed can now be selected for MIDI play-back of trills and mordents.
  • The play-back duration of a single acciaccatura is now user-selectable.
  • Play-back in a repeated section can now be sounded on the second time only
  • Play-back now respects piano pedal markings.
  • Play-back of a swung piece may now include sections played straight
  • Play-back can now be directed to a given MIDI device from within MOZART's global preferences, rather than having to do it via the control panel.
  • Chord shapes play back in the inversion defined by the fingerboard diagram.

User interface

  • Drag and drop is introduced for importable formats (eg .mid).
  • Graphic images of your music may now be saved directly as files (in a wide variety of formats).
  • Copying screen images to the clipboard may now be done much more easily without including the false colours and unprintable characters usually used in the screen itself.
  • There is much more control over bitmap resolution when copying images to the clipboard, making it much easier to incorporate pages or snippets of music into word processor documents.
  • The PrintSetup and PageFormat commands are improved making it much simpler to choose a different printer or switch between Portrait and Landscape formats.
  • The status bar now shows the current part and stave name.
  • There are separate commands which send the caret to the next/previous note and the next/previous note or rest.
