Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Uveitis, and Asthma Resolved on Gluten Free Diet

Does a gluten free diet help this (insert disease name) autoimmune disease? The answer is typically yes. Why? It has been well established that gluten contributes and in many cases, causes these types of conditions. We know that it creates leaky gut syndrome and gut bacterial changes that change the way the immune system behaves. This in turn leads to the development of autoimmunity. There are 140 different types of autoimmune disease. Typically they are named based on their location. For example:
  • Celiac disease (affects the small intestine)
  • Crohn’s disease (right side of the large intestine)
  • Ulcerative Colitis (left side of the large intestine)
  • Hashimoto’s (thyroid gland)
  • Dermatitis Herpetiformis (the skin)
  • Eczema and psoriasis (the skin)
  • Asthma (the lungs)
  • Osteoporosis (the bones)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and Lupus (the joints)
  • Schizophrenia and bipolar disease (the brain)
  • Neuropathy, Epilepsy, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy (the nervous system and brain)
In Nancy’s Case, 3 different types of autoimmune disease were resolved on a TRUE gluten free diet. Despite the doctor telling her not to change her diet, she did. Her joint pain, stomach problems and more completely resolved…

If you have been diagnosed with autoimmune disease…

For anyone with a diagnosis I recommend genetic testing for gluten sensitivity immediately. Diet is too easy to change and has too great an impact to ignore. Unfortunately most traditional doctors will tell patients that diet has nothing to do with disease. This would not be the case if nutrition was actually taught in medical school. If your doctor will not help you identify nutritional elements related to your disease, I recommend that you find a functional medicine doctor who will. Wishing you excellent health, Dr. Osborne – AKA The Gluten Free Warrior Dr. Peter Osborne

  1. I just watched the video that Nancy made and how going gluten free has helped her. I was also advised to go gluten free by a friend. I had made a comment on Facebook and she answered me, telling me that she had been having the same problems until she was diagnosed with Celiac, and she asked me to go online and check it out. I went to a site that had a list of 25 symptoms, and I was shocked to realize that I had 24 of them going on. I’ve been gluten free for about 3 weeks now and the intestinal problems are gone, allergies are easing up, no more asthma problems. I used to wake myself up at night gasping for air…that has since stopped. I was so tired all the time, needing a nap on most days. I’m not needing a nap now on most days. I am so glad that my friend told me about this, and that I listened to her. I have not told my doctor thatI’m gluten free yet, but luckily for me, he’s a doctor who will listen to his patients and will admit that he doesn’t always know the answer to things. I am so thankful for my friend and her advise!

    1. Hi there can toy please give me some information on how to start a gluten free diet which foods should and shouldn’t be eaten for I have no idea. I am suffering from ankylosing spondylitis and Graves disease.

  2. Awesome work Pete. It’s amazing how one little tweak in your diet can have so many benefits. It reminds me when we were in Cali. That was one 5 minute conversation that truly changed my life.

    Thanks bro.

  3. Hey Pete
I think it’s def a scary thing that people put alot of trust into certain doctors and try just don’t know their stuff, I guess its alot like personal trainers, you keep representing the good ones mate.

  4. I am 38 years old and have Thyroid disease, IBS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, GERD, adrenal insufficiency and am in a pre-diabetic state and cannot lose weight despite diet and exercise. I was always tired, had terribly allergies, back pain, early stages of carpal tunnel and chronic constipation. After consulting with my alternative practioner, she suggested going on a Gluten Free diet and that I have Leaky Gut syndrome. After 2 weeks off gluten and supplementation to help heal, my back pain and carpal tunnel are just about gone, my alleriges are better, i have more energy, my blood sugar is in better control, my appetite has decreased to a healthy level and my skin looks great. My reflux is almost gone, I am starting to lose weight and my digestion is beginning to heal. Although, I am going for colon hyrdrotherapy as the constipation is still an issue. But overall, I feel like a fog has been lifted. All these years, I thought I had to just live with these things. Doctors never believed me that I still felt sick even though my labs didn’t reflect it. To me, this is like a miracle. I have been telling everyone I know who suffers from autoimmune disorders. I wish there was more wide spread education to the masses about this. I bet lots of people could feel better.

  5. I used to have frequent headaches, eye pain, Iritis, joint pain and GERD. All of these things have are auto-immune related and have cleared up since I went off gluten!

    1. Hi there, I too have uveitis from my ankylosing spondalitis. Where can I can information on what diet plan to follow?

        1. I have been truly gluten free since 2006.I have celiac and hashimoto’s.I cook everything at home, all from scratch with only 100% organic foods, grass fed meats and pasture raised eggs fresh from the farms and tons of fish.I also eat very little grains and beans which I sprout most of the time.I had back pain since teenage years, which unfortunately got worse over the years to the point I am not able to move my leg,nor walk straight. My mid back is killing me,same with with the back of the neck, hips, knees, shoulder and wrist.Sometimes I get some pain in the joints of my fingers, and very sensitive to outside light.Doctors did nothing for me,saying I have muscle spasms, which I know is not true.I also kept on having dislocated hip and rib.My mid back pain is so severe that makes me unable to breath properly and sometime I get tears in my eyes.I have 3 young kids, last one is only 2 and I stay home to take care of them.I am only 38 and afraid it will get worse. My kids need me,so i don’t know how to find a doctor who can tell me what I have and how to treat it.I do not take any medication beside the thyroid, just a few supplements.Almost never get sick either.Does anybody experienced something similar?

          1. Ann maybe this will help: read Jonathan Bailor’s book “Diabesity” he talks about how to balance hormones and reprogram hypothalamus to send correct messages to the entire body.

  6. My Mom died with Auto Immune Hepatitis in 2007. I’m following in her same path with elevated LFT’s, and auto immune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. My skin and eyes were so yellow, I thought I was going to be put on the Liver Transplant list. But, I’m now a Rosy pink thanks to a gluten free diet. I no longer suffer from eye pain, migraine headaches, and tinnitus. And, I’m hoping my LFT’s are normal when I return to the Gastro in March!

  7. Great website. I also have had uveitis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, osteopenia, Sjogren’s, spondylitis, severe scoliosis, AMD, dry eyes, extreme anxiety, pain 24/7,tremors, tics, bowel issues, headaches, tinnitus, vitiligo, asthma, derma herpetiform, panic attacks, hashimoto’s, anemia and many vitamin deficiencies, hypertension, mouth ulcers, ulcers, cracks on sides of mouth, gastritis, COPD, asthma, GERD, gall bladder issues (removal), lymph nodes (large), hoarseness, vomiting and diarrhea, rhinitis, gum and teeth disorders, asthma, headaches all day and night, irritability and so much. All symptoms are healed or massively improved because I QUIT GLUTEN.

  8. Omg. I suffer from Ank Spondylitis, chronic asthma Rhinitis headaches IBS and fibromyalgia. I need to try this. I eat healthily but do consume breads and grains. Docs want to put you on drugs and steroids instead of suggesting a diet with nutrients instead of fillers. I have a dog who has to go grain free or he doesn’t cope, we too are omnivores so it makes sense.

  9. Eating less grains have made me feel much much better. 20 years ago I ate a lot of bread, cereal and milk products. I believe I had constant stress in my body back then and now I can understand why.

Nonetheless I am still trying to figure out if there’s more to it that just asking certain foods… Harmful bacteria in the gut and joints, maybe caused by eating meat or being stung by mosquitos or bitten by horseflies and/or ticks? I’m just second guessing because some people seem to do quite well on eating grains, but maybe that’s just what it looks like.
